Delta Pi

Brigham Young University

Members of Delta Pi, Fall 2002 Induction.

Delta Pi was installed by Dr. Ned Davidson of Gamma Chapter in Brigham Young University on May 27, 1959. Dr. H. Darrel Taylor served as the first faculty advisor, with numerous other faculty members rotating through the position, including Drs. Harold Rosen (who was also an original chapter member), John Rosenberg, and Jeff Turley. Dr. Dale Pratt has been the adviser since 1995.

Since 1989, Delta Pi has inducted over 80 members annually as it services the needs of a large undergraduate population of Spanish-speakers. Service has been an important part of Delta Pi’s mission, with members serving as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, conducting food drives, and helping with general university and departmental service. Chapter members have organized opening socials and graduation banquets for the department, dances and parties, cultural fairs for Hispanic Awareness Month, and trivia bowls, among other activities. In response to the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1998 in Central America, Delta Pi members sponsored a community relief drive that collected over 650 large containers of clothing and supplies, and facilitated its shipment to needy families.

Delta Pi also holds many academic activities, including presentations by visiting scholars and writers, and writing workshops. Since 1990 Delta Pi has published La marca hispánica, a journal of graduate and undergraduate critical and creative work.

Delta Pi members have won numerous Sigma Delta Pi awards, including:

Premio Gabriela Mistral (Dale Pratt, 1990; Barbara Gordon, 1991; Robert Strong, 1992; Baldomero Lago, 1993, Nathan Richardson, 1994; Erin Baker, 1998).

Sigma Delta Pi Summer Scholarships (Barbara Gordon, David Wright, Dale Pratt, 1990; Nathan Richardson, 1992; Christopher Lee, Wanderley Reis Da Silva, Rachel Wunderlich, 1996; Carolyn Bond, Teralee Kemp, 2000; Ryan Davis, Collin McKinney, 2001; Kelly Connor, Earl Brown, Jonathan Wade, 2002; Melissa Mills, Wesley Pack, Bethany Beyer, 2003).

Since 1990, Delta Pi has been named a national Honor Chapter 8 times, and in 2002-2003 it received the Premio Ignacio y Sophie Galbis for its outstanding activities.

Sigma Delta Pi congratulates Dr. Pratt and all the members of Delta Pi for their numerous activities and exemplary commitment to the ideals of the Society.
