Sigma Delta Pi & AATSP: Recipient of the 11th Annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) are pleased to announce that Kathryn Petersen of Indiana University Bloomington is the recipient of the 11th annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Ms. Petersen will be recognized formally at the 103rd Annual Conference of the AATSP in Atlanta, GA, during the AATSP’s Awards Ceremony at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis at 6:30pm on Friday, July 9, 2021. Congratulations to Kathryn for this exceptional honor.

Sigma Delta Pi’s Gabriela Mistral Award for Student Members: Nominations Accepted All Year Long

Sigma Delta Pi’s Gabriela Mistral Award may be granted to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student of Spanish who is an active member of Sigma Delta Pi and who has demonstrated noteworthy involvement and initiative in their chapter. Honorary members are not eligible, but any active chapter may nominate one active student member per year for this honor with no more than one awardee per chapter per year.  The awardee receives a beautiful certificate courtesy of Sigma Delta Pi and, while supplies last, the book De Chile al Mundo courtesy of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation (https://gabrielamistralfoundation.org/web/).

Any active chapter of Sigma Delta Pi with a deserving active student member should send a letter of nomination from the chapter adviser along with one other letter of recommendation and the nominee’s current academic transcript to sdpnational@gmail.com. Decisions are communicated within one week of receipt of a complete nomination packet.  Nominations only accepted via e-mail. 

Please don’t allow a deserving chapter member to be overlooked!

Yesterday’s event highlighted the history of the Orden de Don Quijote, one of the Society’s highest honors, and culminated with the virtual induction into this Order of Drs. Joan L. Brown (U of Delaware) and Michael Scott Doyle (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) for their outstanding contributions to Hispanism.
