A New Year’s Message from the National President

Sigma Delta Pi

Dear chapter advisors and members of Sigma Delta Pi,

As we enter a new semester and a new year, I wish to express my appreciation for your support of our beloved Society throughout the past year.  Thanks to the dedication of so many, 2025 proved to be a particularly productive year for Sigma Delta Pi.  A few of the highlights include:

  • The celebration of our first poetry plenary session, co-sponsored with the AATSP at its annual conference in Panama last June
  • The inaugural session of “Transformative Spanish Language Programs: Preparing the Workforce of Tomorrow,” a collaboration with the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española, at the AATSP conference
  • Sigma Delta Pi’s Triennial Convention in Panama, with 9 chapters awarded the Premio Octavio Paz for having maintained the status of “Capítulos de Honor y Mérito” for the entire triennium
  • A virtual celebration of the “Día de Sigma Delta” on May 1, featuring a very distinguished guest, Dr. María Carreira, Executive Director of the AATSP
  • Sigma Delta Pi’s first celebration of National Poetry Day in October, which brought together the Latin American poets who participated in our plenary session at the AATSP conference to share their poetry and inspiration
  • A virtual event in November co-sponsored with Albatros Ediciones and featuring a presentation by Dr. Charles Moore, recipient of the 2025 Albatros Award, to commemorate the foundation of our society 106 years ago
  • A very successful annual grant program with numerous scholarships awarded for undergraduate internships and summer study abroad, as well as graduate-level research grants.

This new year promises to provide many new benefits and opportunities for our chapters and members.  Particularly exciting is the recent announcement of Sigma Delta Pi’s partnership with Conversifi, an immersive language-learning platform that facilitates one-on-one video conversations with native speakers.  We are also pleased to offer to all active chapters free online access to the recently published resource manual:  Transformative Spanish Language Programs:  Preparing the Workforce for Tomorrow, a collaborative project with the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española

Finally, we look forward to receiving many applications from student members for the 2026 Undergraduate Internship and Study Abroad Awards Programs, as well as the Graduate Research Grant Program.  Deadlines are rapidly approaching, so please check our website at www.sigmadeltapi.org for details.

Warm wishes for a wonderful spring semester!

Lucy
