Transformative Spanish Language Program Award

Transformative Spanish Language Program Award
Sigma Delta Pi & ANLE

With their shared missions of fostering bilingualism and promoting an understanding of, and appreciation and respect for the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, Sigma Delta Pi and the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE) co-sponsor their “Transformative Spanish Language Program Award” that each year may recognize a U.S. university or college (2 or 4 year) whose Spanish language program has demonstrated:

  • Curriculum/program Innovation
  • Steady and recent growth in enrollment over a sustained period of time
  • Successful preparation of its graduates for today’s workforce
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration

Only colleges/universities with an active chapter of Sigma Delta Pi or SHLE are eligible for this award.  Nominations must originate from the active chapter of Sigma Delta Pi or SHLE and on behalf of the department that houses the “Transformative Spanish Language Program” in question.

Nominations must be submitted by October 1 using the official online form. Incomplete nominations will be disqualified.  In addition to the information specified in the form, the following will be required:

  • A narrative of no more than 250 words that describes the “transformative” program and addresses in detail the four bullets specified above (“Innovation,” “Steady and recent growth in enrollment,” etc.).  Failure to address all four areas will result in a disqualified application.
  • A link to the college/university catalog that includes the “transformative” program’s description and curriculum.
  • All relevant and confirmed data that support the narrative, to include a recent history of enrollments, tracking information on recent graduates from the program, mapping of the program to state workforce needs, etc.

Nominations will be judged by a joint committee that includes leaders from both Sigma Delta Pi and the ANLE, and chaired by the Executive Director of Sigma Delta Pi.

Nominations may include programs featured in the annual “Transformative Spanish Language Programs” session held at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) conference, but all nominations must be submitted via the online form. The award will be announced at Sigma Delta Pi’s annual reception at the AATSP conference each summer.  The awardee will receive a plaque, listing on the Sigma Delta Pi and ANLE webpages, an official joint press release issued to all relevant parties, and a travel stipend of up to $500 ($250 from Sigma Delta Pi and $250 from the ANLE) for one program representative to attend the annual AATSP conference and receive the award in person.
