Due to the fact that K-12 schools are currently experiencing a Spanish teacher shortage, and enrollment in Spanish courses is declining in higher education, advocacy for the teaching of Spanish in the U.S. is now more necessary than ever. That is why Sigma Delta Pi (the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society), the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and Vista Higher Learning (VHL) are joining forces to develop processes and pathways together to advocate for Spanish language learning in the U.S. and abroad.
The project is in the planning stages, so we seek input from educators of Spanish and associated administrators (department leaders, district supervisors, etc.) about your advocacy needs to help shape our project.
We understand a basic definition of advocacy to mean support for a particular cause – in our case the teaching and learning of Spanish as a second language. We invite you to participate in a brief survey to learn about your advocacy needs. The survey will be open from January 17 to 31, 2020 and will take no more than 10 minutes.
We invite you to share this survey to colleagues who teach Spanish to ensure the widest dissemination possible.
To complete the survey, click here. ¡Gracias por compartir con nosotros!
Sincerely,
Mark Del Mastro, Sigma Delta Pi
