In Spring 2020, Sigma Delta Pi celebrates the centennial
of its first formal induction of new members that took place on May 1, 1920 at 1629 Walnut Street in Berkeley, CA under the leadership of undergraduate student Ruth Helen Barnes, the Society’s founder and first president.

To commemorate its inaugural initiation ceremony,
Sigma Delta Pi will issue a replica of Ruth Barnes’ original membership pin
to every new member inducted during the spring of 2020:
Current members may also purchase this special replica membership pin through their home chapters.
Sigma Delta Pi’s centennial celebration continues through July 2020,
and we encourage our chapters to plan local activities that are appropriate for this special period in our history.
Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society,
begins its centennial celebration on January 1, 2019 to commemorate its founding on November 14, 1919 by a junior undergraduate student named Ruth Helen Barnes:
Because the first official induction ceremony of new members was conducted on May 1, 1920, our centennial commemoration will continue through June 30, 2020.
During this 18-month celebration, we will recognize our Society’s 100-years through numerous initiatives and projects detailed on our new centennial webpage:
Please bookmark and visit this page often for regular updates on various opportunities to participate in this historic commemoration.
A special “Felicidades” section of Entre Nosotros will feature reflections/tributes from Sigma Delta Pi’s members and friends, who are invited to submit their warm wishes for the 100th birthday of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
Submission deadline: January 25, 2019
