Sigma Delta Pi and VHL call for chapter nominations for “Student Success Stories”

By Noon (EST) Monday, April 25, 2022, active chapters of Sigma Delta Pi are asked to nominate undergraduate student members, active or recently graduated and regardless of career path, whose successes have been enabled/enhanced by their Spanish language and Hispanic culture education from the college/university.

12th Annual Premio Mario Vargas Llosa: April 15 Nomination Deadline

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society,
and the AATSP, the American Association of Spanish and Portuguese,
announce their 12th annual

Mario Vargas Llosa Award

granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish.


  • Nominee must be a full-time undergraduate student;
  • Nominee must have completed at least six (6) upper-division courses (post intermediate level) total in Spanish language, literature and culture; at least half of ALL these upper-division courses completed must have earned grades (not “Pass/Fail”)
  • Nominee must be a member of Sigma Delta Pi;
  • Nominator must be a member of the AATSP;
  • The completed “Nomination Form” (download here) and all specified supporting materials must be submitted via e-mail by April 15, 2022.  Incomplete nominations will be disqualified.

Selection of the 2022 award will be made by a committee of leaders from both Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP, and nominees will be selected on the basis of academic achievement in all upper-division Spanish courses completed and extra-curricular involvement as related to Spanish.

Sigma Delta Pi provides the Mario Vargas Llosa Award recipient with a plaque, the most recent issue of the María Moliner Diccionario de uso del español and one of Vargas Llosa’s novels. The AATSP organizes and hosts the award venue at their annual conference in July. Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP will provide a travel stipend to defer costs related to attending the conference. The awardee will be announced prior to the AATSP Conference.

Sigma Delta Pi’s National Gabriela Mistral Award for Student Members: Nominations Accepted All Year Long

Sigma Delta Pi’s Gabriela Mistral Award may be granted to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student of Spanish who is an active member of Sigma Delta Pi and who has demonstrated noteworthy involvement and initiative in their chapter. Honorary members are not eligible, but any active chapter may nominate one active student member per year for this honor with no more than one awardee per chapter per year. 

The awardee receives a beautiful certificate courtesy of Sigma Delta Pi and, while supplies last, the book De Chile al Mundo courtesy of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation (

Any active chapter of Sigma Delta Pi with a deserving active student member should send the following to
1) a letter of nomination from the chapter adviser
2)  one other letter of recommendation
3) the nominee’s current academic transcript

Decisions are communicated within one week of receipt of a complete nomination packet. 
Nominations only accepted via e-mail. 

Please don’t allow a deserving chapter member to be overlooked!
