Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) are pleased to announce that Anna Schmieding of Texas Tech University is the recipient of the 13th annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Ms. Schmieding will be recognized formally at the 105th Annual Conference of the AATSP in Salamanca, Spain, during the AATSP’s Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Congratulations to Anna Lee for this exceptional honor.

Sigma Delta Pi & AATSP: Recipient of the 11th Annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award

Kathryn Petersen,
Winner of the 2021 Mario Vargas Llosa Award

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) are pleased to announce that Kathryn Petersen of Indiana University Bloomington is the recipient of the 11th annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Ms. Petersen will be recognized formally at the 103rd Annual Conference of the AATSP in Atlanta, GA, during the AATSP’s Awards Ceremony at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis at 6:30pm on Friday, July 9, 2021. Congratulations to Kathryn for this exceptional honor.

and the AATSP, the American Association of Spanish and Portuguese,
announce their 11th annual

Mario Vargas Llosa Award

granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Nominee must be a full-time undergraduate student;
  • Nominee must have completed at least six (6) upper-division courses (post intermediate level) total in Spanish language, literature and culture; at least half of ALL these upper-division courses completed must have earned grades (not “Pass/Fail”)
  • Nominee must be a member of Sigma Delta Pi;
  • Nominator must be a member of the AATSP;
  • The completed “Nomination Form” (download here) and all specified supporting materials must be submitted via e-mail by April 15, 2021.  Incomplete nominations will be disqualified.

Selection of the 2021 award will be made by a committee of leaders from both Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP, and nominees will be selected on the basis of academic achievement in all upper-division Spanish courses completed and extra-curricular involvement as related to Spanish.

Sigma Delta Pi provides the Mario Vargas Llosa Award recipient with a plaque, the most recent issue of the María Moliner Diccionario de uso del español and one of Vargas Llosa’s novels. The AATSP organizes and hosts the award venue at their annual conference in July. Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP will provide a travel stipend to defer costs related to attending the conference. The awardee will be announced prior to the AATSP Conference.

granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Nominee must be a full-time undergraduate student;
  2. Nominee must have completed at least eight (8) upper-division courses (post intermediate level) total in Spanish language, literature and culture; at least half of ALL these upper-division courses completed must have earned grades (not “Pass/Fail”)
  3. Nominee must be a member of Sigma Delta Pi;
  4. Nominator must be a member of the AATSP;
  5. The completed “Nomination Form” (download here) and all specified supporting materials must be submitted via e-mail by May 1, 2020.  Incomplete nominations will be disqualified.

Selection of the 2020 award will be made by a committee comprising leaders from both Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP with Sigma Delta Pi’s Executive Director serving as chair.

Nominees will be selected on the basis of academic achievement in all upper-division Spanish courses completed and extra-curricular involvement as related to Spanish.

Sigma Delta Pi provides the Mario Vargas Llosa Award recipient with the most recent issue of the María Moliner Diccionario de uso de español and one of Vargas Llosa’s novels, and Sigma Delta Pi and the AATSP will provide a separate joint award statuette.

Christy Crouse of Truman State University Named 2017 Mario Vargas Llosa Award Recipient

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) are pleased to announce that Christy Crouse of Truman State University is the recipient of the 7th annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Ms. Crouse will be recognized formally at the 99th Annual Conference of the AATSP in Chicago, IL, during the awards banquet on July 8. Congratulations to Ms. Crouse for this exceptional honor.

Lidia I. Martínez, Recipient of 6th Annual Mario Vargas Llosa Award

Lidia I. Martínez of Sigma Delta Pi’s Chi Gamma Chapter at Stockton University (Galloway, NJ), was selected as the 2016 recipient of the Mario Vargas Llosa Award, a joint recognition of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).  A Spanish major with a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Stockton University, Lidia distinguished herself not only through academic excellence as an undergraduate, but also through her impressive activities beyond the classroom that included a lead acting role in Spanish in a play at the Dante Hall Theatre in Atlantic City, and a Community Engagement Student Fellow with countless hours of service to the local Hispanic community, among other activities. A leader of Stockton’s local chapter of Sigma Delta Pi and a member of the Caribbean Students Association, she has also facilitated the organization of  student field-trips to New York City as well as various events for Hispanic Heritage Month.  Lidia will be formally recognized during  the 98th Annual Conference (July 8-11) of the AATSP in Miami, Florida during the conference’s awards banquet on Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 6:00-8:30pm.

In its 6th year, the Mario Vargas Llosa Award is granted annually to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who is a member of Sigma Delta Pi and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish.
