As we collectively face a new academic year with ongoing challenges due to COVID-19, we must also prepare strategically and thoughtfully to ensure we can sustain opportunities for our students in the future, to include membership for ALL qualifying students, worthwhile activities that reflect the mission of our Society, and continued engagement with our members and campus communities throughout the 2020-21 academic year.
This past spring, many chapters delayed initiating new members until the fall with hopes that “normal” campus activities would resume and face-to-face induction ceremonies would again be feasible. However, we all recognize now that such “normalcy” as many had hoped is not yet a reality.
What to do?: Plan on a regular schedule of activities, even if they must be remote due to social distancing protocols and/or an online semester.
If your chapter delayed a spring 2020 initiation of new members or only inducted graduating seniors this past spring:
Plan an initiation, even if virtual, of ALL qualifying members in early September (or earlier!). This will refortify your chapter membership base and sustain the vitality of both your chapter and the national organization.
Plan multiple initiation ceremonies, one in fall and one in spring, to provide ample opportunities to all your qualifying students:
Holding two ceremonies will help rebuild your chapter and help provide more students the opportunities that Sigma Delta Pi membership provides.
What guidance can you provide for virtual chapter activities, to include a virtual initiation ceremony?
Below is a recently approved policy to guide you with your virtual planning.
Sigma Delta Pi and SHLE
Policy for Remote Events
Last night, Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at 7:00pm Eastern Time, Sigma Delta Pi held its first-ever, national Virtual Awards Reception to recognize the accomplishments of select chapters and members for the 2019-20 academic year. We were honored with the virtual presence of many distinguished guests to include the AATSP’s Executive Director Sheri Spaine-Long who gave the opening toast, Past AATSP Executive Director and Sigma Delta Pi Honorary President Emily Spinelli, Past AATSP President Martha Vásquez, current AATSP President Ada Ortuzar-Young, Sigma Delta Pi’s National President Lucy F. Lee, President Emeritus Germán D. Carrillo, Regional Vice-Presidents, Honorary President Domnita Dumitrescu, several past national awardees, chapter faculty advisers and student chapter officers.
If you were unable to attend, you may view the recorded ceremony at Video of Sigma Delta Pi’s Virtual Awards Reception.
This event marked the conclusion of a memorable celebration of our Society’s centennial (1919-2019), and we look forward to the continued progress of our beloved organization through the support and exemplary work of all of you, our chapters, members and faculty advisers of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

Online Chapter Activities
This past spring was Sigma Delta Pi’s first collective experience with remote induction ceremonies and online chapter activities, and to share more widely your ideas for future chapter planning, we would like to compile a list of recommendations from our chapters for remote activities to post on our website as a resource for our members. For consideration, please send your ideas to email@example.com.
Screenshots of Online Initiation Ceremonies and/or Chapter Events
Did your chapter hold a virtual induction ceremony or other online activities this year due to COVID-19? Do you have screenshots from those virtual (e.g., ZOOM) activities? We plan to create a photo slide-show at our national website with select photos from chapter virtual activities in 2020. For consideration, please e-mail your screenshots to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Submission deadline for the above: Friday, July 3, 2020.
For the 8th consecutive year and to commemorate its 100th anniversary, Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, hosts student members to share their local chapters’ best practices through formal presentations. This session was originally accepted and scheduled for presentation at the AATSP’s 102nd Annual Conference in Puerto Rico in July 2020. Because of the conference’s postponement due to COVID-19, in June 2020 participants recorded their planned presentations: click here to view online.
If you missed the June 8, 2020 deadline for submitting your chapter’s required annual report to qualify for national awards, the national office still needs your annual report for our record-keeping even if you did NOT hold an initiation ceremony in AY 2019-20. Please visit https://sigmadeltapi.org/chapter-resources/annual-report/ to submit your chapter’s 2019-2020 Annual Report Form online.
